Summary.
Planning permission was given to demolish and construct a new, three-storey extension for residential use. The watching brief was limited. One borehole was dug, from which one piece of painted wall-plaster was retrieved. A 450mm-deep trench was later dug by hand to locate a drain but only impinged on modern deposits were uncovered. Piles were drilled and ground beams for the extension excavated and concreted without an archaeologist being present. According to the contractors, the ground beams were 1m deep, Roman buildings should have been encountered. The spoil heap was checked for finds on two occasions but nothing of archaeological interest was observed.
