Summary.
Five test-pits were excavated by hand on the putting green and in the nursery of Upper Castle Park in April 2007. Those on the putting green did not encounter any Roman deposits or features, being dug through topsoil and post-Roman dark earth. The two test-pits dug in the nursery did reach Roman archaeology, ie a late Roman demolition layer starting at between 820mm and 950mm below ground-level.
