Summary. An archaeological evaluation by trial-trenching was carried out in advance of the construction of eleven new dwellings on land to the rear of 1-3 Valley Road, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. Eleven ditches, four pits and one natural feature were recorded. Most of these were probably of modern date, associated with the plant nursery and market garden which used to occupy the site. They are, therefore, largely horticultural. Seven sherds of pottery appear to be largely incidental and suggest an area on the periphery of settlement/occupation in the later prehistoric and medieval periods.
