Summary. An archaeological evaluation (six trial-trenches) was carried out at Redbank, Bury Water Lane, Newport, Essex in advance of the construction of five new dwellings. Despite being located close to the medieval town, and the sites of a possible castle and leper hospital, the only archaeological remains were a field-boundary ditch and backfilled pond, both identified on the 1896 6-inch OS map and extant until at least the late 1940s.
