Summary.
An archaeological evaluation (four trial-trenches) was carried out at land off Greenhills, Ashen Road, Ashen in advance of the construction of two replacement dwellings. A single medieval ditch and residual pottery indicates activity in the area in the late 11th12th century. This may have been associated with the medieval watermill, Benedictine monastery at Clare or the medieval moated site at Claret Hall. Two flints of a Late Neolithic-Bronze Age date also suggest activity in the area in the prehistoric period.
