Summary.
Archaeological monitoring was carried out at St Helena School, Sheepen Road, Colchester, Essex during groundworks for four concrete foundations for a pair of rugby goal-posts. The development site is located within the scheduled monument of Sheepen between the sites of two Roman temples (Colchester Temples 2 and 3: SM EX 46, HA 1002173).
The foundations for each goal-post were excavated to a depth of 0.9m below current ground-level, but no significant archaeological horizons were encountered. However, a Roman spearhead was recovered as a residual find from a post-Roman accumulation layer.
