Summary. An archaeological evaluation (fourteen trial-trenches) was carried out on land south of Berechurch Hall Road, Colchester, Essex in advance of the construction of thirty-two dwellings with associated parking areas, new site access and associated groundworks. Thirteen features – eight ditches, a pit, a charcoal-rich pit, a pit/treethrow, a possible treethrow and a possible pit – were uncovered. A single ditch of possible Iron Age date and a charcoal-rich pit of Late Roman or early Anglo-Saxon date evidence some degree of human activity at the site during these periods, while the remaining datable features were associated with agricultural activity from the late 17th century to the 20th century.
