Summary. An archaeological excavation (following an evaluation) was carried out at Colchester County High School for Girls, Norman Way, Colchester, Essex in advance of the construction of a new school building. Previous excavations in the area have uncovered a palisade trench of probable Roman date, a Roman wattle-and-daub structure and scattered pits and ditches, some of which were dated to the 1st and 2nd centuries. These excavations uncovered a cluster of ditches and pits which yielded a considerable quantity of pottery indicating the 3rd and 4th centuries as the primary phase of activity at the site, and suggesting that the remains of a mid to late Roman villa or farmstead lie nearby.
