Compute cluster

Our compute cluster, known as the heap, is a set of 42 Shuttle PCs which we put together one afternoon in 2003 from components; several have died in the intervening time from power supply problems. All the original 42 nodes fitted snugly onto a single desk and we suspect the heap was the fastest desktop in existence at that point. Although the individual machines are now rather slow, 20–30 machines running a single job is still a great deal faster than a single state-of-the-art processor!
