Summary.
A programme of building recording was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust (CAT) on a complex of farm buildings at Kitchen Farm, Kitchen Hill, Bulmer, Braintree, Essex in November-December 2012. The work was commissioned by John Finch Partnership on behalf of Granville Developments. The farm buildings comprise a complex of back-to-back linear structures and include a large barn at the ‘front’ of the range facing the farm entrance. The structures were built between 1876-1898 and are an example of a tenantry model farm layout. Kitchen Farm is a good example of how landowners attempted to make their farms viable, during the farming depression of the late 19th century, through diversification and changes in land usage and farming practices.
